2022 Juried Exhibition of Student Art

Congratulations to all students, teachers, and schools who participated in the 11th Quadrennial Juried Exhibition of Student Art (JESA). The Juried Exhibition of Student Art is the education program which officially “kicks off ” the activities of the quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis (IVCI). It is part of a tradition of excellence which began in 1986.

To celebrate the 11th Quadrennial, more than 21,000 students in grades 1 through 12 and 151 teachers from 57 counties across the state took part in this exciting multi-disciplinary program designed to integrate the disciplines of the performing, literary and visual arts.

Registered art teachers were sent curriculum packets which provided information about the violin through musical examples, visual arts reproductions and language arts references. Students then produced artwork centered on the theme of the violin. The state was divided into five regions so that all areas of Indiana would be equally represented. The artwork submitted was further divided into six judging levels. Art teachers provided the first level of adjudication, choosing which works would be submitted from each school. More than 800 works were submitted for Regional Judging. Thirty winners from each region, 150 in all, moved on to the Final Judging process. A panel of judges consisting of Mark Ruschman, Chief Fine Arts Curator for the Indiana State Museum, David Michael Slonim, former Visiting Artist with the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, and James Wille Faust, professional Indiana artist, reviewed the 150 art works, eventually choosing 30 Streeter Hadley Matthews Grand Award Winners. Because the IVCI is the only violin competition of its stature in the United States, it is an integral part of an event which is followed throughout the world – one which sets the bar for artistic excellence.
